Lekha Jama is a Ceramicist and Lighting Designer.
She is interested in design with a focus in lighting and typically explores themes such as ornamental nature influences, abstract fluid forms. Jama finds clay immensely satisfying as a design medium to work with , creating lamps that are durable with movement that merge expression with spatial design.
Jama has been interacting with clay and lighting for 9 years so far. First as ceramics she bought then made art with. Setting up lighting installations with procured lighting pieces to explore lighting spatially and to create the ideas for her ceramic lamps and one hybrid art lamp using a Himalayan salt lamp. Setting up fabric installations as substitutes of lampshades. Then a hiatus. Then sewing lampshades from fabric and ceramic studies then making one lighting piece In 2022.
Jama’s Ceramic lamps are intricate and therefore labour intensive. Each lamp takes several weeks to make. Designs are sketched and prototyped. It is then built up through a coil technique. Then dried, sanded ,ready for glazing and firing.
